Thrice-Forged RPG News

Now that I’m wrapping up the Thrice-Forged RPG’s introduction adventure, and it’s first Errata update, I’m getting to the point of where I need to establish its own website. My art, fiction, and gaming work are all deeply intertwined, but they also speak to different audiences, thus calling for different websites. I already own the Thrice-Forged RPG URL, so that makes it a good deal.

The proposed site will make it easier for me to post updates, errata, and adventures, and share my thoughts as the developer. My personal creative process lends itself to writing over-developed, outsized game mechanics, and then over time I tease out the simplicity and (it is to be hoped) elegance within that. Raw ideas have to live in the wild for while before they reach their most true forms, I believe.

I also am planning on game mechanic demonstration videos, or on-boarding videos after this. I’ll cover that as it develops.

When I write about elegance in game design, what I’m hinting at is this: the more realistic (and thus cumbersome) you make the rules, the less fun it will be to play. Stripping back that layer of complexity and tedious mechanics to something that is fun, easy-to-learn and entertaining, yet still true to your vision, is where the art of it comes in. Well, at least it is for me.

My expectations are measured. I know that a little indie game written by a one-man creative team can’t compete with corporate owned games that have massive financial backing, huge talent pools to draw upon, and a half century as a cultural juggernauts. This problem is but a microcosm that all indie creators face.

Yet, is there not room in that giant media pie chart for indie creators to make homes for their works? Can indie products have an influence on the greater creative scene? I’m sure of it. Comics, as an example, is a small industry, yet its effect on the greater cultural zeitgeist has been earthshattering.

That is the point of such efforts, I guess.
