Good Morning. It’s a beautiful day in the Midwest, and a fine morning to sit out on the back porch.
I sound chipper, but there have been a few things weighing on me. I sprained my right ankle, and I went to a podiatrist. Both my ankles are messed up, or as the Dr. told me, I “have issues.” I’m working to take care of that. But, really, the effects of aging feel like insult to injury. By the time you take glasses, hearing aids, a mouthguard, and now ankle braces into account, it’s . . . shall we say, daunting.
Still, I’m very much alive, and potentially have many creative years ahead of me. I don’t have to discover who I am, nor develop my base skills, or figure out what I have to say. Life has supplied those for me. I have the maturity to tackle and finish big projects, and juggle multiple interests.
Now that I have the Brotherhood of Broken Men cover painted, I think it’s time to dig in and finish off the novel that goes with it. Yeah, it’s already written, but I have a couple of scenes to add.
I haven’t been in a hurry to hit the publish button because my books haven’t heated up the internet to date. I don’t believe it’s a quality issue, to be honest. In fact, I’m not sure what the issue is. Just because I want my fiction to be popular doesn’t mean it will automatically be so. Many great movies languish in theaters long before gaining a cult following, for as an analogy. And, in this day of self-publishing and print-on-demand, there is a tsunami of new books out there every day, and getting noticed among the storm surge is a mystery I have not cracked. I’m not even sure young people read much anymore. I’m not going to talk about shortened attention spans and the draw of other, more visceral media, but you get the idea.
So, the long and short of it is that I’m not taking it personally. I’m focusing on quality, not quantity, and I’m working slower, and with more intention.
